HP’s sustainability strategy is built on three core pillars: Climate Action, Human Rights, and Digital Equity, with a primary goal of becoming the world’s most sustainable and just technology company.

HP has set some of the industry’s most aggressive climate targets, aimed at decoupling business growth from carbon emissions:

Renewable Energy: Currently powers 100% of its U.S. operations with renewable electricity.

Net Zero by 2040: Committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its entire value chain by 2040.

Carbon Neutral Operations: Aims for carbon neutrality and zero waste in its global operations by 2025.

Emissions Reduction: Achieved a 41% reduction in carbon emissions since 2019.

Instead of the “take-make-waste” model, HP is shifting toward 75% circularity by 2030.

Ocean-Bound Plastics: HP was a pioneer in using ocean-bound plastics (sourced largely from Haiti). By 2026, this has been expanded across most of the Z, Elite, and Envy lines.

Recycled Metals: New laptops (like the EliteBook X) now feature up to 90% recycled magnesium and aluminum in their chassis.

Longevity & Repair: HP is increasingly focusing on modular designs to make repairs easier, extending the life of a device from the typical 3–4 years to 7+ years.

Certified Refurbished: They have launched an official HP Certified Refurbished program to give older hardware a second life with a full one-year warranty.

 HP Recycling Program

HP’s recycling efforts are primarily managed through the HP Planet Partners program.

It is designed to be a “closed-loop” system, meaning the materials from your old tech are processed and used to manufacture new HP products.

This is the most popular part of the program.

HP provides several ways to return used original HP cartridges for free.

Retail Drop-off: You can drop off used cartridges at major retailers like HP WORLD, etc.

Bulk Collection: For businesses with large volumes (e.g., 76+ toner or 1,000+ ink cartridges), HP can arrange a free pallet pickup.

Hardware Recycling (Laptops, Printers, Monitors)

HP accepts all HP-branded IT equipment (and sometimes non-HP equipment if you are replacing it with a new HP purchase).

Consumer/Home Office: You can find local drop-off points through HP’s locator tool.

Commercial/Business: HP offers “Custom Recycling” for businesses, which can include pickup services, data destruction, and a Certificate of Destruction for security compliance.

HP treats digital access as a human right, with a mission to accelerate digital equity for 150 million people by 2030.

HP PATH: This is their “Partnership and Technology for Humanity” accelerator, which provides hardware, connectivity, and digital literacy training to underserved communities.

Education: Through projects like HP Muskaan and HP LIFE, they provide free business and IT skills training globally.
